We’ve been busy working away behind the scenes with 5 young writers, on the Paper Weights project. Supported by some amazing editors, experienced writers and mentors these incredible Paper Weighters are developing vibrant, articulate and compassionate creative articles, essays and short stories on social justice issues affecting Australian’s today. Tomorrow is the final workshop as part of the project where our writers will be engaging in a process of constructive group feedback as well as learning more about working with editors and pitching to publications – the nuts and bolts behind the visions.
To celebrate the achievements of the writers so far we’ll be presenting the Paper Weights Project at Law Week 2014, with the support of our project partner, the ACT Committee of the Alternative Law Journal. It’s a lunch time and there will be light refreshments (read: snax) and a short forum with the writers on their experiences of the project, their thoughts on writing to illuminate the dark and the idea of “narrating a law story”. Following the forum, audience will be invited to mingle and share their own law stories, with someone they’ve never met before. A challenge for the lawyer types? Perhaps, but a good one as the Alternative law Journal and Scissors Paper Pen passionately believe that when we write creatively about the law, we generate new insights about ourselves, our law practice, and our community. More details on the launch can be found below – and RSVP so there’s enough snax for all the hungry storytellers!
And what next? Well, over the next few weeks the Paper Weighters will be putting the finishing touches and final edits to their work, and with the support of Scissors Paper Pen, approaching publications to pitch their work. SPP will also be featuring these works on our blogsite over the coming months. Keep and eye on our blog for updates on the illustrious soon to be brilliant careers of our Paper Weighters!
